    Up for Consideration is a Rare Important Dated c.1812 and Identified Scrimshaw Powder Horn belonging to Captain John Morgan of the Dayton Ohio Volunteer Militia Under the Command of Brigadier General William Hull

    Offered to you is this amazing original museum quality early 19th Century American Military Carved, Scrimshaw powder horn owned and carved by Capt, John Morgan of the Ohio Volunteer Militia in the city of Dayton Ohio during the War of 1812. He was serving under the Famous Brigadier General William Hull and this horn appears to be a tribute to that man. William Hull served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and infamously remembered for surrendering Fort Detroit during the siege of Detroit and recieved a court-martial and sentenced to death but later receiving a pardon from President James Madison. This Captain John Morgan must have idolized General William Hull as this Horn is basically a homage to this one mans and his achievements to which Morgan may have witnessed during his tour of duty with the Volunteer Ohio Militia.
    The Horn
    The scratch art begins on the spout where the names of Detroit, Chicago, Mackenac, Plattburg, Fort Niagra and Sacketts Harbor. Along that same edge, written horizontal is written, "Major Capt.n John Morgan - Ohio Vol. Militia Dayton Ohio 1812" Note the "Captain" Has been crossed out and the word "Major" has been added. Directly under that is written "Under command of Brig, Gen. Hull" As you turn the horn clockwise you see a en-framed portrait of Brigadier William Hull with the letters O.V.M (Ohio Volunteer Militia). And with a simply incredible Cityscape of Dayton Ohio just below the portrait and just above the carved wood plug.
    This Historical War of 1812 Era Powder Scrimshaw Horn Measures measures 13.75 inches long by 3.0 inches wide at the plug. The carved plug is tapered like a pyramid and has the proper period iron staple. Proper and original nails used to secure the base plug to the horn and nice border decoration going around the edge of th horn. The spout is carved with a 1.50" spout and also has a correct iron strap staple.
    Condition is Good, a Solid Powder Horn with Definite Age ware, a 3 inch vertical split at the base going at an angle through the Dayton Cityscape.small missing area at base and decoration by the iron nails holes, Soiling and, Chipping and Scuffing as usually seen in period Horns.
    Amazing Detailed Historic Folk Art mentioning actual places of battles and encampment during the During the War of 1812, in the Dayton Ohio area. Ohio was on the front lines in the conflict between the United States, Great Britain, Canadians, and the Native American allies of each side. Fighting raged in the northeastern section of the state and on the adjacent Lake Erie.
    Capt. John Morgan
    Captain John Morgan served with the Ohio Volunteers during the War of 1812. His service beginning under the command of Col. John Ferguson in the 2nd Div, 3rd Brig and 1st Regiment of Dayton Ohio Militia which played a significant role in the conflict, providing crucial support in various battles and skirmishes against British forces and their allies. He eventually climbed up the ranks to Major and worked directly under the command of Brigadier Colonial William Hull.
    John Morgan was born on August 8th, 1788, in Springhill, Fayette County, Pennsylvania and was a son of David Morgan, who came to Fayette County in 1788 and took up land on Grassy Run. The Morgan’s are of Welsh extraction. Served as a private in the war of 1812. Obtaining the title of "Colonel" in the State militia, commissioned by Governor Simon Snyder. He became a Major in the Ohio Volunteer Militia in 1812 under Colonial William Hull. Member of the State Legislature 1843 - 1845 Fayette Co., PA. An advocate of the public school system of the state and was one of the first school directors of his township. He died on 5 Jan 1880 (aged 91) in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
    This Powder Horn is an Ex-Museum Piece which had previously been on display in a Private Collection in Worcester, Massachusetts for many years!
