IDED EARLY BOWIE KNIFE, BOWIE FAMILY, MEXICAN WAR,1842/45-46,CIVIL WAR 1861/65
This very early hand forged blacksmith made Texas Bowie knife was used by the Bowie family of Texas during the Somervell Expedition against Mexico in November & December 1842 & again during the Mexican War from 1845 to 1846 & in the Civil War from 1861 to 1865.
It was first used by Daniel Bowie during the Somervell Expedition against Mexico in November & December 1842 & again when he served in
Lieutenant Colonel Peter Bell’s
Second Regiment Texas Mounted Volunteers during the Mexican War in 1845 to 1846.
He fought at the
Battle of Buena Vista
where he was “distinguished” in the action against Mexican Major Generals Francisco Pacheco & Manuel Lombardini’s Regiments.
He charged the Mexican cannons (14 cannons) & helped to kill & drive off the Mexican gunners then set fire to one of the limbers that was full of gun powder
It was then used in the Civil War by Private & Sergeant Daniel Bowie when he served in the 1st Regiment, Texas Cavalry/1

Texas Cavalry at the Battle of Palmetto Ranch on May 12 & 13, 1865.
This knife is 10 5/8” long with a 5 3/8” x 1 1/8” Bowie type blade, brass guard & wood handle.                                                   It is in very well used condition with the blade having light/medium to medium pitting & shows several forging flaws with a dark brown patina on the blade.
The brass guard has a dark bronze/brown patina & the wood handle is in fair condition & shows several very old repairs with several age cracks.
It comes with a certificate of authenticity, a family letter & historical research.
