Description
ANTIQUE MEXICAN AMERICAN CIVIL WAR SOUTHERN BOWIE FIGHTING KNIFE SHEATH.This is a fantastic item! It is a large Bowie or Fighting Knife. With original carved leather over wooden sheath.
Overall length of knife is 16 1/4 inches. Large clip point blade that measures 11 1/2 inches. Still very sharp. Made of folded steel that resembles Damascus steel. Spine is 3/16". Blade is 1 1/4" wide at crossguard. Overall 17 1/2" in sheath.
Hilt is stag horn and is 5 inches in length. Beautiful deep antique caramel color and patina! Oval bronze crossguard. Round bronze disc pommel.
This was obtained from a gentleman from SE Louisiana, Lake Ponchartrain area. It resembles Bowie knives made by Thomas Griswold & Co out of New Orleans. But I can't find any markings.
Condition is excellent antique. No major damage. Stag horn handle has some old hairline cracks. Blade is moderately pitted. Everything nice and tight! Weighs 1 pound 1.5 ounces in sheath.
Sheath is leather over a wood scabbard. Belt loop is still functioning. Beautifully carved with Scroll design. A little damage at tip. Still somewhat supple, someone took care of this knife!
An awesome example of an Early Southern Bowie!
