American Pillow Pommel Saber, War of 1812, Mexican & Civil WarsThis American 1790/810 pillow pommel saber with engraved & gold inlaid blade was used by the Hitchcock & Carr families of Baltimore Maryland.
It was used in the War of 1812 at the Battle of North Point in Baltimore Maryland in September, 1814, in the Mexican War in 1847/48 & in the 1

.Maryland (Union) Cavalry during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865.
This saber was most likely made in England for import to America as it has “WARRENTED” engraved on the blade which is a British style.
This saber is 33 ¼” long with a wide & heavy engraved & gold inlaid 28” x 1 ¼” blade that has the following engravings:
Right side - 3 lines, an oval with a flower with 4 petals & an oval center, a laurel branch with leaves, laurel branch with leaves with a banner that has WARRENTED, laurel branch with leaves, an American eagle with a Union shield on its breast with 15 stars, & a banner in its beak that has EPLURIBUS & a star.
Left side - single line, wavy line, solid line, large laurel branch with leaves, crossed spears/lances with flags/quiver with arrows with a circle in the middle & a large laurel branch with leaves.
The guard, ferrule & pillow pommel are brass & the grip is brown horn
This saber is in very good condition with the blade blued for its full length, the engraving & gold inlays are sharp & easy to see.
The brass guard, ferrule & pillow pommel has a nice bronze patina & the horn grip shows some use & has a few very small dings but no cracks.
Hitchcock/Carr family saber history
This saber was first used by Nathaniel Hitchcock when he served as a Cornet in the Independent Light dragoons, Maryland Militia during the Battle of North point & Fort McHenry on September 12/15, 1815.
It was used in the Mexican War by 2

Lieutenant & Adjutant John Carr of the Regiment of District of Columbia & Maryland Volunteers from May 1847 to July 1848.
It was used in the Civil War by Franklin Hitchcock when he served in the 1

. Regiment (Union) Maryland Cavalry, also called The Potomac Home Guard Brigade from October 1861 to June 1865.
It was bought directly from the Hitchcock family by Joseph Becker who was a well known & respected collector & antique dealer who had a large collection of Baltimore area, Maryland & District of Columbia (Washington D.C.) artifacts. It comes with a certificate of authenticity & extensive historical research.
