    Description

ABANDON SHIP! (1957) Tyrone Power / Original 19-Image Pre-Production Presentation Board - PURCHASED FROM THE RAY HARRYHAUSEN ESTATE!
    *GUARANTEED VINTAGE & ORIGINAL!
*This terrific lot is for a large Pre-Production Presentation Board of the nude swim sequence from this taut, Tyrone Power action drama. Average frames are 5.5 x 3 - drawn in pencil on this large, printed storyboard sheet. Captions are in white ink. The unusual panoramic board at the top was drawn on separate paper and is
    affixed to the board.
*This lot is a terrific example of scarce 1950s pre-pro storyboarding, but there is the added plus that this piece was purchased from the estate of special effects legend, Ray Harryhausen. The boards are not signed by Ray, but did come from Ray's collection. We believe the work to be in Harryhausen's hand. Abandon Ship! was photographed by Wilkie Cooper and produced by Charles H. Schneer in 1957, and in 1958 both men began their long association with Harryhausen on the classic fantasy adventure film The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad. The drawings also suggest Harryhausen's drawing style. All clues lead us to believe that this is, indeed, the early work of master Harryhausen.
*Size is appx. 21.5 x 29.25 inches for full Presentation Board ~
*OVERALL CONDITION: Very Good or better - Slight bow on light cardboard at far right (will flatten) - There is damage along the top border. We don't think you will be disappointed in this rare piece.
*HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Seven Waves Away (alternate U.S. titles: Abandon Ship! and Seven Days From Now) is a 1957 British adventure film directed by Richard Sale and starring Tyrone Power, Mai Zetterling, Lloyd Nolan, and Stephen Boyd. When his ship goes down, an officer has to make an agonizing decision on his overcrowded lifeboat.
Richard Sale adapted the film from his 1938 short story of the same name, originally published by Scribner's Magazine. The plot has similarities to the real-life sinking of the American ship William Brown in 1841. The William Brown hit an iceberg 250 miles off Newfoundland and lost 31 of its 65 passengers. Two boats with 17 crewmen and the remaining passengers escaped the wreck, but more than a dozen passengers were sacrificed from the crowded longboat.
Though there is no direct acknowledgment by the filmmakers, the film ends with a voice-over stating, "The story which you have just seen is a true one. In real life, Captain Alexander Holmes was brought to trial on a charge of murder. He was convicted and given the minimum sentence of six months because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the incident." (Wiki)
*STORYLINE: A ship's officer finds himself in command of a lifeboat full of survivors of a sunken luxury liner. (IMDB)a
